What Is Food Waste?

Food waste describes any food that is not consumed and thrown away for whatever reason. It could be waste from manufacturing, processing, out of date food from retailers or leftover food from restaurants and food preparation businesses.

The UK’s food and hospitality industry produces over a million tonnes of food waste every year. It is estimated that food waste is responsible for around 30% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions making it a major factor in our climate emergency.

When food waste is sent to landfill as it breaks down it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is very damaging to the environment. The benefits of separating food waste are not just environmental, it can also have a significant effect on what you pay to dispose of it. Landfill Tax currently stands at nearly £100 per tonne to dispose of general waste, it costs significantly less to dispose of food waste in an anaerobic digestion plant. Plus food is generally the heaviest part of your general waste, removing it will also lower your overall waste costs.

What Happens To Food Waste?

All the food waste we collect is processed through our anaerobic digestion facilities.  This process produces renewable energy as well as organic fertiliser,  saving six times more greenhouse gas than composting.

What Is Anaerobic Digestion?

Anaerobic digestion is a process in which bacteria called methanogens break down food waste, without oxygen. When the bacteria breaks down the food waste, it gives off biogas, a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, which is a renewable source of energy. The gas rises to the top of the digester and the solid food content falls to the bottom and is used to make organic fertiliser. This gives you zero to landfill, which is great for the environment.
