What Is Carboard Recycling?

Occasionally, there are misconceptions regarding the recyclability of cardboard, however, unlike certain other recyclable materials, cardboard recycling processes are straightforward.

Essentially, all forms of cardboard can be recycled, and it possesses the capability of being recycled many times over. Cardboard recycling yields a substantial reduction in pollution, up to 95%, owing to the pre-processed fibre derived from trees.

Two primary categories of cardboard exist: standard cardboard and corrugated cardboard. Standard cardboard, a durable paper variant, finds common application in packaging materials such as cereal boxes and dry food containers. Corrugated cardboard, distinguished by its sturdy composition featuring an interlayer of S-shaped fibres, serves as a robust material extensively employed in shipping and packing boxes. Presently, over 80% of corrugated cardboard undergoes recycling processes.

What Can Go Into A Cardboard Recycling Bin?

All cardboard can be recycled providing it is clean and dry. Greasy or wet cardboard such as fast food boxes or pizza boxes are considered contaminated and should be disposed of in general waste. If greasy or wet cardboard gets mixed in with dry recycling not only can it jam up the sorting equipment it will render the whole recycling load as unusable.

You should also remove any plastics from your cardboard to make the recycling process easier. Different grades of cardboard can be recycled together making it easier for you to collect it all in just one bin. There is an exception unfortunately, Tetra-Paks. These are cartons that are coated with plastic such as juice boxes and milk cartons. Although they are mostly made of cardboard they also contain plastic so cannot be recycled with cardboard or corrugated cardboard.

Where Does The Cardboard Go After Collection?

After your cardboard is collected it is taken to our recycling facilities, where it is re-pulped and the fibres are put through a chemical process to separate and bleach them. The fibres are then cleaned and screened to get rid of any contaminants. Next they are washed to remove any ink and finally they are pressed and rolled into paper. The paper is then converted into boxes or made into completely new products.

What Are The Advantages Of Recycling Cardboard?

Recycling cardboard is so much better for the environment than making new cardboard from virgin materials (trees). Recycling cardboard uses between 70% to 100% less virgin material and up to 99% less water.

Roughly between 25% to 50% of the energy used during manufacturing is saved by using recycled materials. Recycling just one tonne of cardboard can save up to 15 trees, reduce the demand for landfill, save you money on landfill tax and help the environment.
