Taunton is a town in the County of Somerset, England. The town lies on the River Tone and is situated between the Blackdown, Brendon and Quantock Hills. This area is known as the Vale of Taunton. The population of the town is around 70,000 people.
Cambria Farm, was the site of a Bronze and Iron Age settlement and also a Roman farm. The name of the town means ‘Town on the River Tone’. The town was also important during Anglo-Saxon times as the town had a Burg with a mint.
Taunton Castle was built in 1129 and was an important Anglo-Saxon stronghold. The Normans rebuilt the Castle in stone and the Castle was owned by the Bishops of Winchester. The castle played host to King John and his son Henry 3rd.
Goodlands Garden, which runs alongside the River Tone in the centre of the town, is home to the Pride Rainbow Path. The path opened on the 28th June 2021 and marked the anniversary of the Stonewall riots. It is the first path of its kind in the UK and the path opening coincided with the first Taunton Pride being held in July 2021.
Somerset Council announced its climate change strategy in November 2020. The council announced that it had set a target to be carbon neutral across all its own operations by 2030. The council has identified many areas for change including local waste management. The methane produced from waste accounts for over 90% of total methane produced in the County of Somerset and so the council is fully focused on increasing recycling, reuse, repair and reduction of daily waste.
Businesses also need to play their part and GWR Waste Management can help with that.
