Navigating The Waste Regulations In Wales: A Comprehensive Guide For Businesses

Aug 08, 2024

New rules being introduced by the Welsh Government will mandate that all workplaces separate recyclable items in the same manner that the majority of households currently do. This will enhance the quantity and quality of the waste that we collect and sort. In accordance with the new legislation that took effect on April 6, 2024, the following materials must be segregated for collection and collected separately:

  • Food waste, applicable to premises generating more than 5kg of food waste per week
  • Paper and Cardboard
  • Glass
  • Metal, plastic, cartons, and other fiber-plastic composite packaging of similar composition
  • Unsold small waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
  • Unsold textiles

The Workplace Recycling Law In Wales – Why Have These Changes Been Implemented?

In addition to increasing recycling quantity and quality, the improvements are essential to Wales meeting its 2050 carbon emission reduction and zero waste goals.

The goal is to extend the useful life of materials, which offers substantial financial benefits. Keeping high-quality materials that can sustain our supply chains and return to the economy more efficiently can result in savings as material costs rise. For instance, by generating employment and reducing disposal costs.
